𝟏. 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐎𝐍 The 1st Line Infantry Battalion had its capacity increased in 1815 at the cost of new recruits being more youthful. This, however, proved not to be a problem when they accompanied the Duke of Brunswick into Belgium. During the Battle of Quatre 3ras, they were placed on the frontlines, standing strong against French Infantry. The French, to counter this, brought their cannons near and poured canister shot into the ranks of the Brunswickers. With scores of men strewn about, the 1st was forced back, taking heavy casualties. At Waterloo a few days later, they were held in reserve until the British Foot Guard advanced on Hougomount to reinforce. The Brunswick Infantry filled the gap they had left, and during Ney's doomed charge, the 1st repelled a French Chasseur Cavalry unit with ease.
