Description
The United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, N.Y., was formed in 1802 from members of the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. The academy continued to serve as the principal method of training future military officers throughout the 1800's. By 1812, the superintendent of West Point was Captain Alden Partridge, and the academy was heavily intertwined with the Corps of Engineers, to which graduated cadets would often be commissioned. The curriculum of the academy varied, but included infantry drills, mathematics, physics, philosophy, French, drawing, geography, and engineering.
