Description

𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐬 - 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐬 Organized by the Texian General Council on December 7, 1835, the Volunteer Artillery Corps was established as a specialized technical force to manage heavy ordnance. Comprising four to five detachments totaling 150 to 180 artillerists under Colonel James Clinton Neill, the corps brought vital gunnery expertise to a military reliant on small arms. Tasked with garrisoning critical posts like the Alamo and Goliad, they also deployed field pieces, including the famous "Twin Sisters" cannon, to support infantry maneuvers. Though many original gunners were lost at the Alamo and Goliad, a refined company of 30 to 32 artillerists under Captain George W. Hockley operated at the center of the San Jacinto line, utilizing rapid-fire canister to shatter the Mexican breastworks and secure independence.
