The Republic of Vietnam Navy (RVNN) The Republic of Vietnam Navy (RVNN) was the naval branch of the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) from 1955 until 1975. It played a vital role in protecting the nation’s coastline, rivers, and territorial waters during a period of prolonged conflict in Southeast Asia. Originally formed from the French colonial naval forces, the RVNN gradually expanded and modernized with assistance from the United States. By the late 1960s, it had become one of the largest navies in Southeast Asia, operating hundreds of vessels ranging from patrol boats and river assault craft to destroyer escorts and amphibious ships. One of the most distinctive features of the RVNN was its strong focus on riverine warfare. Through its Brown Water Navy operations, the RVNN conducted patrols, troop transport, supply missions, and combat operations in the Mekong Delta and other inland waterways, which were crucial battlegrounds during the Vietnam War.
