Description
The cavalry regiments of XVI Corps operated as mechanized reconnaissance and flank security units, replacing traditional horse cavalry with jeeps, light armored vehicles, and armed half-tracks. Their primary mission was to reconnoiter enemy terrain, secure routes and flanks, maintain communication between divisions, and provide tactical intelligence to the corps headquarters. During the Rhineland campaign (September 1944 – March 1945), the cavalry regiments conducted forward patrols and secured the northern flank of the Ninth Army while the main divisions crossed the Roer River. They provided vital information on enemy positions, safe routes, and obstacles, and secured bridge crossings to support the advance of infantry and armored units.
