Description
The United States Atlantic Fleet has a long history of protecting America's interests across the Atlantic Ocean and supporting naval operations around the world. Although its responsibilities are now carried out by United States Fleet Forces Command, the Atlantic Fleet's legacy continues through the ships, submarines, aircraft, and Sailors that maintain readiness along the East Coast and deploy wherever they are needed. These forces conduct maritime security operations, training exercises, humanitarian assistance, and combat deployments. The USS North Carolina (BB-55) was the lead ship of the North Carolina-class battleships and became one of the most distinguished warships of United States Navy during World War II. Commissioned in 1941, she served extensively in the Pacific Theater, providing anti-aircraft defense for aircraft carriers, bombarding enemy positions, and supporting amphibious landings.
