𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐔𝐌𝐈｜新選組 📜 "士道ニ背キ間敷事。" ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🤺 The Shinsengumi were a group of elite swordsmen comprised mainly from the lower-samurai class, who acted as the police force of Kyōto, commissioned by the Kyōto Shugoshoku, Matsudaira Katamori. Many of the members were recruited from the dōjōs of Edo, such as the Shieikan, and initially served as the bodyguards of the Shōgun during his diplomatic mission to the Emperor. ⚔️ Initially led by Serizawa Kamo, who was then assassinated on orders from Katamori, the leadership of its next commander, Kondō Isami, would see the Shinsengumi at their highest, with their involvement in the Ikedaya disturbance, in which several pro-imperial plotters schemed to set Kyōto ablaze and capture the Emperor. Elements from Chōshū, a dissenting domain, were caught during the Gion festival. ⛩️ Adherence to bushidō, and utmost loyalty, are the ideals which the Shinsengumi hold in policing the streets of Kyōto.
