Description
A família imperial brasileira governou o Império do Brasil entre 1822 e 1889, desde a Independência do Brasil pelo príncipe Pedro de Bragança, que depois foi aclamado imperador como Pedro I do Brasil, até a deposição de Pedro II durante a Proclamação da República, em 1889. Durante o período monárquico da história brasileira, a família imperial brasileira era um ramo da Casa Real Portuguesa de Bragança. Ela era reconhecida legalmente como uma instituição; os parentes mais próximos do monarca eram considerados seus membros, e eram desconsiderados aqueles que renunciavam aos seus direitos dinásticos. Somente após a Proclamação da República, em 1889, e o fim da monarquia, esse conceito foi oficialmente e legalmente abolido. Contudo, grupos monarquistas brasileiros mantiveram, de forma informal, o conceito de família imperial, e, da mesma forma, criaram o título de Chefe da Casa Imperial do Brasil, atribuindo-o aos pretendentes ao extinto trono brasileiro.
