A man of noble birth was granted privileges in both senatorial and militaristic affairs, often concerning quick promotions, due to his ability to claim ancestry. Each Roman family was led by a paterfamilias who served as the head of his family. By the time of Constantine, Roman society's hierarchy had shifted; the emperor now reserved the right to elevate a man's position at a whim without second thought or criticism.
