Description
Massilia was an ancient Greek city-state founded around 600 BCE by settlers from Phocaea. Located on the coast of southern Gaul (modern-day Marseille, France), it became a powerful maritime republic known for trade, naval strength, and its alliance network with neighboring peoples. Massilia was governed as an oligarchic Greek polis, with power held by wealthy citizen families and a council. Its economy relied heavily on Mediterranean trade, exporting goods such as wine, pottery, and olive oil while importing metals, grain, and luxury goods from across the ancient world. The city maintained a strong navy to protect its trade routes and colonies along the western Mediterranean coast. Militarily, Massilia combined Greek hoplite traditions with a professional naval force and citizen levies. Its soldiers were renowned for discipline and defensive warfare, allowing the city to resist larger powers such as the Carthaginians and later ally with Rome against regional threats.
