Description

The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (506th PIR) of the 101st Airborne Division was formed in July 1942. During World War II, their first major challenge was the training at Camp Toccoa, where they were forged into an elite parachute unit. On June 6, 1944, D-Day, they jumped into Normandy with the mission to secure roads and bridges behind enemy lines at Omaha Beach. Despite scattered parachute drops and initial losses, they successfully achieved key objectives that contributed to the success of the landing. In September 1944, they took part in Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands, capturing bridges at Nijmegen and facing heavy German resistance. Then, in December 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, they defended the town of Bastogne under siege, enduring extreme cold and shortages of supplies, demonstrating remarkable resilience. The 506th PIR became a symbol of courage and sacrifice, and their motto, “Currahee,” reflects their spirit: “We stand alone together!”
