He is shaped, as iron is shaped by hammer and fire.” ₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪₪ The Diatreptēs arose from a tyrant’s vision: Dionysios the Elder, hardened by siege and betrayal, sought to craft a generation of Syracusans who would not depend on mercenaries, nor collapse beneath hardship. If the Spartans could forge warriors through the agōgē, then Syracuse too would mold its sons — but in a manner befitting the rhythms and needs of Sicily. The youths trained beneath the Sicilian sun, running until the dust of the Epipolae plains clung to their skin like a second garment. They practiced spear-thrusts at dawn, shield-discipline at dusk, and slept in barracks built above the city that they would one day defend. Though not yet citizens of the phalanx, they served the army with zeal: carrying messages through the smoke of battle, guarding the camps at night, and standing behind the main line to fill the ranks of those who fell.
