Description
Department of State Security (usual name: Securitatea) was the name given to the intelligence service in Romania during the communist period. It was for most of its existence under the administrative subordination of the Ministry of Interior. As an instrument of the Romanian Communist Party, whose directives it carried out, the Security played a leading role in imposing a unitary ideological orientation at the level of society. For this purpose, some members of the Security resorted to actions that went beyond legal and constitutional norms, and in certain cases, to crimes and violations of human rights. Until the mid-60s, the Securitate contributed to the sovietization of Romania, and then to maintaining the communist regime in power. A complex system of surveillance and repression was developed for these purposes.
