Description
A part of Daijo-kan [太政官] under the Kunaishō [宮内省] respectively; led by those in the Naishi-tsukasa. The ladies of the Imperial Court were educated nobles themselves, made to either serve the Empress or advise the Emperor. Most importantly, it was the only way a woman could hold an offical number rank for herself. ( Ikan, Nyoki for women. From 8-1, 1 being highest. ) The Naishi-dokoro (内侍所), or "Place of the Ladies-in-Waiting," was a highly sacred hall within the Imperial Palace in Heian Japan (794–1185). It served as the repository for the Sacred Mirror (Yata no Kagami), one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan, and functioned as the central hub for courtly and religious ceremonies. Although the Court Ladies often lived in different parts of the palace, the Naishi-dokoro was the most well known.
