Description
A nyōbō (女房) was a high-ranking lady-in-waiting who served in the imperial court or aristocratic households during Japan’s Heian period (794–1185 CE). They were educated, cultured women from noble families assigned to serve specific members of the imperial family, such as the Emperor (ue no nyobo) or the Empress and her private quarters (kokyu).
