Description
Offenburg was a vicus made in 73/74 AD. It was built on a loess hill at the intersection of the east-west road from Strasbourg that goes through the Kinzig Valley to the Danube River and the north-south highway from Augst to Mainz. It also had a connection to the Kinzig River waterway which is a tributary of the Rhine River. The vicus consisted of a 1640-foot-long civilian settlement. The place would remain in Roman hands until sometime in the early 3rd century AD, with the Alemanni moving in and taking residence there. It would be part of Alemannia, becoming a Pagus settlement, hosting a garrison of between 200 and 300 warriors led by a Reguli/Lesser King. These would be recruited across Alemannic tribal lines of wealth and class from young nobles, shirkers, cowards, thieves, traitors, and other young men. Later in the 8th century it would be added to the Mordunowa Pagus. Like the rest of Alemannia it would exist until the 6th century when it was added to the Frankish Empire.
