กรมทหารราบเฉพาะกิจที่ 68 จัดตั้งขึ้นเพื่อเพิ่มขีดความสามารถด้านการรบและการสนับสนุนภารกิจในพื้นที่ยุทธศาสตร์สำคัญ โดยเป็นหน่วยเฉพาะกิจในสังกัดกองบัญชาการยุทธการ เพื่อรองรับสถานการณ์พิเศษ การปฏิบัติการเฉพาะกิจ และการปฏิบัติการร่วมในภารกิจระดับกองทัพและระหว่างเหล่าทัพ วัตถุประสงค์ในการจัดตั้งกองทหารราบเฉพาะกิจที่ 68 คือเพื่อเสริมขีดความสามารถด้านการรบในระดับกรมทหารราบที่มีความคล่องตัวสูง ยืดหยุ่นต่อภารกิจ และสามารถสนับสนุนการรบในลักษณะเฉพาะกิจได้อย่างต่อเนื่องและมีประสิทธิภาพ ทั้งในด้านกำลังพล อาวุธยุทโธปกรณ์ และการประสานการยิงสนับสนุน
