Martyred, his death radicalized every Latter Day Saint in the territory. While under the guidance of Brigham's successor, Orson Hyde, Porter Rockwell began his work to remilitarize the Church and prepare for the opportunity for independence and vengeance. When the Civil War began, Deseret seceded itself and fought its own way to prosperity - having become allies with the South, they battled to earn a bloody white peace.
