Description
In 1290, the Kingdom of Hungary stood at a major turning point in its history, marked by the end of a dynasty and the onset of a period of uncertainty. At that time, the last king of the Árpád dynasty, Ladislas IV (the Cuman), had just been assassinated. His death left the throne without a direct heir, plunging the kingdom into a succession crisis. Several claimants from various European royal houses with ties to the Árpáds stepped forward. This era was characterized by an intense power struggle between these claimants and powerful Hungarian oligarchs—members of great noble families who had amassed vast wealth and territories, exerting considerable influence over the kingdom's politics. These oligarchs often backed one claimant or another based on their own interests, thereby undermining royal authority and effectively fragmenting central power. The situation was further complicated by external pressures.
