Description
Antwerp is a port city on Belgium’s River 'Scheldt', with a history back to the Middle Ages. Antwerp’s Flemish Renaissance architecture is typified by the 'Grote Markt', a central square in the old town. At the 17th-century Rubens House, period rooms display works by the Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens. Both economically and culturally, Antwerp is and has long been an important city in the 'Low Countries', especially before and during the Spanish Fury and throughout and after the subsequent Dutch Revolt. Flowing through Antwerp is the river 'Scheldt'. Antwerp is linked to the North Sea by the river's 'Westerschelde' estuary. It is about 40 km north of Brussels, and about 15 km south of the Dutch border. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe after Rotterdam and within the top 20 globally.
