The South African Navy is the maritime warfare branch of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), responsible for protecting the country’s territorial waters, safeguarding maritime trade routes, and securing its maritime interests. Established in 1922 as the South African Naval Service, it became part of the Union Defence Force in 1939 and later developed into the modern navy of democratic South Africa following the country’s transition in 1994.
