Situated on a peninsula surrounded by warm coastal waters, Florida was duly named for its lush landscapes and endless sunshine first noted by early explorers. Because of its fertile soils, thriving trade routes, and position as a crossroads between the Atlantic and Gulf, Florida became known as the gateway to the South. Not to be confused with a real life county / state.
