Description
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) traces its roots to 1871, when a volunteer brigade known as Engine Company No. 1 was formed with hand-drawn equipment and raw determination. By 1886, the city officially transitioned to a paid department, launching with 31 firefighters and a Chief Engineer. Early signals of fire included gunshots into the air, and firefighting was as much a civic ritual as a public service.
