𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 – 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐬 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 “The Austin Guards” The Travis Guards were organized at Austin on March 1, 1840, as a volunteer company named in honor of William B. Travis, who was killed at the Alamo in March 1836. Formed during the early years of the Republic, the company reflected the continued practice of adopting patriotic titles drawn from the Revolution and its leaders. Though styled as an infantry company, the Guards operated in practice as mounted troops when required, enabling rapid movement across the frontier and flexible service in both local defense and field operations. Composed of volunteers from Austin and surrounding settlements, they were relied upon to assemble in times of alarm, defend the capital, and take part in expeditions when called into service.
