The Pathfinder Badge is awarded to soldiers who complete the United States Army Pathfinder Course. Pathfinders move ahead of the main force to mark the ground where aircraft will operate, laying out helicopter landing zones and drop zones and running air traffic control from the field. The course covers advanced land navigation, sling load rigging and aerial delivery. The badge shows a gold sinister wing set over a gold torch with red and gray flames: the wing for flight and airborne capability, the torch for leadership and guidance. A navigator with the ninth Troop Carrier Pathfinder Group drew the first version in May of nineteen forty-four. The current design was approved in nineteen sixty-four and remade in metal and enamel four years later. The Fort Benning school closed in twenty twenty, and the course runs at Fort Campbell.
