The 43rd Infantry Division was organized at Hartford, Connecticut, in 1925, drawing soldiers from Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Its insignia, a black vine leaf on a red quatrefoil, is a triple symbol: four lobes for the states that raised the division, red for their colonial origin, and the vine leaf for Vinland, New England's Norse name for its wild vines. The nickname Winged Victory plays on the surname of its commander, Major General Leonard F. Wing. Called into federal service in 1941, it fought under General MacArthur in the Pacific, taking Munda airfield on New Georgia and later Luzon in the Philippines. It inactivated on 1 May 1963; its lineage continues in the Connecticut Army National Guard's 143rd Regional Support Group.
