Description

Prince Józef Poniatowski commanded the army of the Duchy of Warsaw, supporting Napoleon while seeking the restoration of a Polish state. He was appointed a Marshal of the French Empire in October 1813, during the Battle of Leipzig. Associated especially with Polish cavalry, the czapka connects this headwear with the distinctive national dress of Polish troops serving alongside France.
