"De Oppresso Liber — To Free the Oppressed." The distinctive unit insignia of the United States Army Special Forces is a pair of silver arrows crossed in saltire, points up, with the V-forty-two dagger laid over them point up, all above a black scroll bearing the motto in silver letters. The crossed arrows are inherited from the First Special Service Force, the joint American and Canadian unit raised in nineteen forty-two, and the dagger is the one that unit carried. The Latin means, roughly, from oppression we will liberate them. Qualified soldiers carry it on the beret flash, and it is carried on the uniform as the crest of the regiment. It is the oldest and most recognised device the Special Forces own.
