In 1872, the new Federal Government of Japan chose Edo as the capital for the new nation as a gesture of good faith towards the bakufu to ease their integration into the new regime. In 1881, the city was briefly occupied by the armies of the Matsumae domain during their rebellion. The resulting siege would destroy much of the old city.
