On New Year's Eve, 1945, enemy forces launched a surprise offensive—Operation Nordwind. On 4 January, two battalions of the Elite 6th Alpine Division quickly captured the town of Wingen. The next three days, house-to-house, close-quarters combat ensued. Nearly 200 US soldiers remained captured until their liberation by the 45th US Infantry Division on 7 January, 1945.
