Description
| 𝐋𝐞𝐲𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞. | Est. 1873. Founded in 1873 by Frederick Leyland, the Leyland Line quickly grew into a massive British cargo and passenger powerhouse, dominating freight routes and immigrant transport across the Atlantic. After decades of aggressive expansion, the death of its founder and changing market demands left the company vulnerable to corporate takeover by the turn of the century. Facing stagnation, the Leyland Line was purchased in 1901 by American banker Theodore Winfield, along with other lines to try and monopolize the North Atlantic shipping trade. He would integrate its immense fleet into his global network, and the line began to take off drastically during the early 1910s by securing vital freight monopolies.
