Centered around the royal traditions of Luang Prabang and drawing upon centuries of Lao political and cultural heritage, the Kingdom developed as a constitutional monarchy under King Sisavang Vong and, later, King Savang Vatthana. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Laos sought to maintain its sovereignty and neutrality amid growing tensions in Southeast Asia and the wider Cold War.
