Description
The French Empire, emerging from the upheaval of the French Revolution, evolved into a dominant European power under the leadership of Napoleon Bonaparte. After rising to prominence as a military commander, Napoleon seized political control in 1799, establishing the Consulate and introducing reforms that centralized authority, stabilized the economy, and modernized French administration. His crowning as Emperor in 1804 marked a new imperial era, backed by the Napoleonic Code, which reshaped legal systems across Europe. Through a series of swift and decisive campaigns, Napoleon defeated major continental powers, redrew borders, and placed allies or family members on thrones, creating a vast empire that extended from Spain to the Duchy of Warsaw. Yet by 1812, tensions with Britain, resistance in Spain, and the fragile alliance with Russia strained the empire. Napoleon’s Continental System faltered, and diplomatic relations deteriorated, setting the stage for the Sixth Coalition.
