Description
The Kingdom of Northumbria was an early medieval Kingdom in what is now Northern England and south-east Scotland. The name derives from the Old English Norpanhymbre meaning "the people or province North of the Humber", as opposed to the people south of the Humber Estuary. The Viking invasions of the ninth century and the establishment of the Danelaw once again divided Northumbria. Although primarily recorded in the southern provinces of England. the chronicles provide some information on Northumbria's conflicts with Vikings in the late eighth and early ninth centuries.
