Militaris Romanus #32774139
Description
𝐀𝐈𝐎𝐌 The military's function during the Roman Republic was defined as service to the Senatus Populusque Romanus, an agency indicated as SPQR on public inscriptions. Its principal body was the senate, which gathered in a building that still stands in Rome's forum. Its decrees were passed on to the state's two highest authorities, the consuls. They might fail whatever armed force they deemed necessary to carry out the decree. Conscription was carried out through a draft of male citizens organized by age class. The officers of the legion were in charge of choosing soldiers for the ranks. The SPQR's will was obligatory on the consuls and the men, and disobedience was frequently punished by death.
