Megala Allagia #32870226
Description
During the late Byzantine Empire, which lasted from approximately 1261 AD to 1453 AD, the standing army evolved into the Allagia. Organized into standing regiments, each consisting of around 50 to 400 soldiers-- these regiments were what Byzantium had to show after her once grand army had been in a never-ending decline since the early 13th century. The Megala Allagia, meaning the "Great Allagia" was the only standing Allagia after the Basilika Allagia, meaning the "Imperial Allagia" disappeared due to the gradual fall of Asia Minor to the Turks during the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
