Description
Cascade County was established in December of 1860 as an administrative area of the Washington Territory. Carved out of Spokane County, the new county encompassed a vast area stretching from present-day Idaho to the Continental Divide, with its first county seat being the Village of Harrison, near the Black “Fork” River. In March of 1864, Cascade County became part of the newly formed Montana Territory after it was separated from the Idaho Territory, following the enactment of the Enabling Act. As settlements increased, several new counties were created from the county's original boundaries. Following the separation of Western Montana, the county was transferred to the State of Absaroka. Today, Cascade County continues to serve as an administrative area of the State of Absaroka.
