Brightfield Northern Railroad was established in March of 1970, following the merger of the Gallatin Northern Lines, Northern Valley Pacific Transport, Stillwater Quincy & Strait Railway, and the Wright Brightfield & Belmont System, as a transregional-level class two freight and passenger railroad in the United States. The companies had operated under intertwined ownership and cooperation, guided by industrialists whose efforts shaped the northern rail corridor despite legal challenges and multiple failed merger attempts. After years of coordination and federal review, approval was finally granted to unify the networks under Brightfield Northern Railroad, establishing a single transregional carrier. Today, the Brightfield Northern Railroad continues to serve as a transregional-level class two freight and passenger railroad in the United States, specializing in freight and passenger transport, moving commodities such as coal, grain, and lumber throughout the United States.
