Description
The history of Institute of Nuclear Research dates back to the mid-XXth century, when on June 4, 1955, the Government Presidium established the Institute of Nuclear Research in Świerk near Otwock (IBJ). The first director was prof. Andrzej Sołtan. The Institute's activities included nuclear research, nuclear engineering and the use of nuclear energy for the national economy. The construction of the first EWA research reactor, launched in 1958, began in Świerk. In later years, zero-power reactors MARYLA, ANNA and AGATA were built in Świerk, used for reactor physics research. In 1966, a decision was made to build the second Polish MARIA research reactor. This reactor - entirely of Polish design - was launched in 1974.
