Description

After the conquest of Constantinople in 1261, Western Catholicism spread eastward to the Eastern Orthodoxy churches, causing civil wars. To resolve this, the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Bishop of Rome met, along with scholars and monks, to heal the Great Schism of two centuries prior in a council. Their theology was reconciled, creating the “Apostolic Church,” governed by dual authority between Rome and Constantinople. Over centuries, corruption and power struggles persisted, sparking reform movements like the Waldensians in the 1200s and Jon Hus in the 1400s, who prophesied a “swan” rising in a hundred years. In 1517, Martin Luther initiated reformation by posting his 95 Theses. By 1520, widespread support from churches, laity, and support from the Emperor of the Christian Roman Empire led to reform. The Bishop of Rome and Patriarch of Constantinople were replaced, and the church was renamed the “Reformed Apostolic Church,” continuing the apostolic tradition.
