Description
The Getikoi Stratiotai hail from the Geto-Dacian tribes along the western shores of the Pontus Euxine, where contact with Hellenic poleis shaped their approach to warfare. Recruited from the youth of the Comati, the lower classes of the Geto-Dacian tribes, they were trained in phalanx tactics and armed with Phrygian helmets, padded leather armor, large oval shields, spears, and sica. Fierce and disciplined, they combined tribal ferocity with Hellenic methods, excelling as mercenaries and frontline soldiers. Known for their courage and pragmatism, they could defend their lands effectively while projecting power against neighboring Greek cities. Herodotos praised them as “the bravest and most righteous of all Thracians,” reflecting both their valor and the religious zeal characteristic of the Geto-Dacians.
