Description

The 1st Armored Division, "Old Ironsides," was activated on July 15, 1940, at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Its creation was a direct response to the German "Blitzkrieg" during the fall of France, which proved that modern war required independent, mobile tank formations. Before this, U.S. tanks were limited to supporting infantry or cavalry. By combining tanks, mechanized infantry, and mobile artillery into one unit, the 1AD became the pioneer of American combined-arms warfare. Built from the 7th Cavalry Brigade, the division spent two years developing the tactics and gunnery that would define U.S. armored doctrine. In 1942, it became the first American armored division to enter WWII, leading the invasion of North Africa. From the harsh lessons of Kasserine Pass to the liberation of Rome in 1944, "Old Ironsides" served as the blueprint for all future U.S. armor. Today, the 1st Armored Division remains active at Fort Bliss.
