Kerajaan Demak ini tercatat menjadi pelopor penyebaran agama Islam di sebahagian besar Nusantara pada umumnya, walaupun tidak bertahan lama dan segera mengalami kemunduran kerana terjadi perebutan kekuasaan di antara kerabat kerajaan. Pengasasnya, Raden Fatah. Pada tahun 1560, kekuasaan Demak beralih ke Kerajaan Pajang yang didirikan oleh Jaka Tingkir/Hadiwijaya. Salah satu peninggalan bersejarah Demak ialah Masjid Agung Demak, yang menurut tradisi umum didirikan oleh sembilan wali utama penyebar Islam di Jawa.
