Description
The Ministry of Defense directed the Burma People’s Army (Pyithu Tatmadaw), functioning as the armed shield of the People’s Republic of Burma under the leadership of the Burma Communist Party. Its primary role was safeguarding national sovereignty, suppressing internal rebellions, and defending against foreign incursions, particularly during the turbulent years of revolutionary consolidation. The ministry oversaw the organization, training, and political education of the armed forces, embedding political commissars at every level to ensure loyalty to Marxism–Leninism and the Party’s command.
