Numerus Exploratorum Germanicianorum Divitiensium #35963656
Description
The "Numerus Exploratorum Germanicianorum Divitiensium Alexandrianorum Antoninianorum Gordianorum" was raised in the early 2nd century. Since local knowledge is particularly important for scouting, this unit was recruited from the area surrounding and including Cologne and Deutz. It continued to rely on new blood from their place of origin; while others came from the Belgian province. The term exploratores tells us they were scouts. They came to be an extremely mobile and power elite unit of the army, being a kind of rapid reaction force whose task whose task was not only armed reconnaissance and long-range patrols deep in enemy territory, but also rapid elimination of smaller enemy incursion; being either wholly or partially mounted, and led by a Prefect. In the 280s/290s garrisoned Cologne-Deutz; then moving to Milan to be part of Maximian's comitatus. Sometime afterwards it moved Gaul where it would c to exist until 356 AD when it disappears indicating its destruction.
