Description
| 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞. | Est. 1871. Founded in 1871 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the American Line established itself as a premier United States-flagged passenger carrier, renowned for its patriotic branding and direct routes to Europe. After decades of serving as America's pride on the high seas, intense foreign government subsidies and fierce competition threatened its market dominance in the late 1890s. Facing financial strain, the American Line was purchased in 1902 by American banker Theodore Winfield, along with other lines to try and monopolize the North Atlantic shipping trade. He would use the company as the foundational American anchor of his trust, and the line began fade away during the early 1910s with passenger services, though still around until the early 1990s.
