Description
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was officially established on December 21, 1935. It was created upon the enactment of the National Defense Act during the Philippine Commonwealth era.The law was championed by then-President Manuel L. Quezon to build a strong national defense program. To help organize and train the new force, Quezon requested the expertise of retired U.S. General Douglas MacArthur, who became the AFP's first commanding officer.
