Description
In late 1726, Brunswicker troops encountered a Mi’kmaq hunting party along the northern waterways. A peaceful exchange followed, with furs and provisions traded for iron tools, cloth, powder, and other European goods.Further meetings brought Mi’kmaq leaders and Brunswick representatives together in council. The Brunswickers sought knowledge of the wilderness and waterways, while the Mi’kmaq sought continued trade and peaceful relations. As the Mi'kmaq elders came into contact with the British authority of the Northern Isles, they pledged loyalty to the movement of the SLC. From these meetings came an agreement of mutual assistance. Brunswick would respect Mi’kmaq authority and trade, while Mi’kmaq warriors would aid British and Brunswicker expeditions.
