Description
The Kingdom of Holland was a constitutional monarchy that existed from 1806 to 1810, replacing the Batavian Republic. It was established by Napoleon Bonaparte, who appointed his brother Louis Bonaparte as king. Although intended to serve French strategic interests, the kingdom retained a distinct Dutch administration and legal system. King Louis Bonaparte attempted to govern in the interests of the Dutch population, adopting Dutch customs, learning the language, and prioritizing disaster relief and economic stability. His policies often conflicted with Napoleon’s demands, particularly regarding military conscription, taxation, and enforcement of the Continental System. The kingdom introduced administrative reforms, centralized governance, and maintained elements of Dutch law and civil institutions. However, ongoing tensions with France, economic decline caused by trade restrictions, and military pressures weakened the state.
