Description
The 2nd Regiment of Line Infantry was a regiment of the Batavian Commonwealth and later the Kingdom of Holland. Originally being dubbed the 1st after its formation, an army wide renumbering of the regiments redesignated it the 2nd, with the designation of the 1st being taken by the grenadiers of the guard. It was part of the Hollander division sent to Northern Germany , onward served with the Holland division sent to Spain where part of the regiment remained until its dissolution. The Batavian Republic maintained Dutch Halve-Brigades (Half Brigades) of Infantry, these comprised the bulk of the Batavian Army and served extensively in campaigns in the low countries against Austro-Prussian and later a Anglo-Russian Invasion of Holland. These half brigades would see no further service and the half brigade despite sharing a similar number to the later 1st regiment had no correlation to the unit save of its ex-battalions eventually forming it.
