Description
The Mersea Police Department was unofficially formed in 1784 as both a night watch and day watch, which served the population of Mersea during the night to deter crime as many other municipalities done in the newly formed Union of Columbia. The MPD was officially formed in 1853 by referendum by residents of Mersea following the formation of the neighboring Lander City Police Department, and had originally mustered 20 municipal police officers to be of service to the city. During the Columbia War of Succession in 1861, the MPD had been responsible for a series of escalations against pro-Union supporters, in which the department had violently suppressed numerous pro-Union demonstrations in support of the Confederacy of Columbia. This resulted in the Union Defense Bureau temporarily seizing power of the department before relinquishing power back to the MPD in 1863. Today, the MPD acts as the municipal-level civilian law enforcement agency of the Town of Mersea.
